We depend on our surroundings obliquely to embody the mood and ideas we respect and then to remind us of them.
Alain De Botton - The Architecture of Happiness
It was the best of times; it was the worst of times… namely the weather. Snow had rendered Europe impossible. 200 flights cancelled out of Heathrow alone. Winter had a tight grip on London and the temptation to stay in my house was increasingly difficult to resist! But braving the elements proved worth while. Paris did not dissapoint, and the temperatures did not cool the designers at Maison et Objet. Here it was summer! With outdoor fireplaces, comfy cushions and seats for enjoying the sun (for when it finally returns). Mobex Outdoor have produced my summer favourite (so far) and this months ‘if I had the space…’
I sat at the Saharian fire table in the -1 degrees temperature feeling pretty toasty. Okay I still had my coat on but it is designed for spring summer and may still be effective at temperatures above freezing. The French outdoor company have a wonderful collection of garden/patio fire tables. Table Saharian is a table with generous dimensions. The center consists of a stainless steel can contain a fire. I didn't even mind spending the rest of the day smelling of wood fire. I found it strangely comforting, like a warm blanket.
Esewhere maison et Objet had set aside an area for which guests could reflect on their experience with a cafe surrounded by mirrors. Although, catching a glimpse of myself towards the end of the day was not welcomed!
